How does house leakage testing work?

  1. A Blower Door is used to depressurize the building shell.
  2. A reading is taken on how much air it takes to depressurize the house.
  3. Based on the volume of the home, an approximate Air Change per Hour (ACH) reading is calculated.
  4. A smoke pen or infrared thermal camera may be used to locate specific leakage areas.

What’s the difference between Home Performance & air/duct leakage testing?

  • Home Performance goes beyond basic leakage testing and addresses all areas of your home’s energy use including insulation, appliances, combustion safety and provides you with a simple payback calculation to see how long it takes to recoup your weatherization investment.

Why choose Premium Efficiency to seal my building shell?

  • We know where to look to find the hidden leaks.
  • A properly sealed attic connection drastically reduces heat loss, and makes the attic insulation operate properly.
  • Sealing leaks in crawl spaces help stop odors and moisture from entering the home.

Why should I have my ducts sealed by Premium Efficiency?

  • Sealed ducts improve air flow and air quality.
  • Sealed ducts increase comfort within your home.
  • You can save money on your heating or cooling bills.

How does duct leakage testing work?

  1. All supply and return registers are temporarily taped off.
  2. A testing fan (Duct Blaster®) is connected to the return or furnace.
  3. The house and duct system are pressurized.
  4. A reading is taken on how much duct leakage is occurring outside the conditioned space (attics, crawl spaces, garages).

Who should have their ducts tested for leaks?

  • Any forced-air heating system with ducts outside the conditioned space (attics, crawl spaces, un-condition basements, garages)
  • When ever equipment is being swapped out or upgraded, most utilities require ducts to be tested and sealed for equipment rebates
  • When purchasing a home with a forced air heating/cooling system
  • When animals have been found and removed from crawl spaces

Your ducts may leak if:

  • If you experience high utility bills
  • Uneven heating and cooling
  • Your home has poor indoor-air quality
  • You have drafts from the ducts
  • Other work in attic or crawl has been done
  • Your ducts were originally sealed with tape
  • If your ducts are outside of your heated space they should be tested for tightness.
  • Both newer and older systems can leak. The age of the system doesn't really matter.

How can sealing the ducts improve my heating and cooling system?

  • Increase air flow through registers
  • Shorten run time of furnace
  • Get all the air you pay for

Why choose Premium Efficiency to test and seal my ducts?

  • No contractor in Oregon seals more duct systems then Premium Efficiency.

How much air am I loosing through leaks in my ducts?

  • Up to 25% of the air can be lost through leaks in the ducts.
  • Disconnected ducts can lose even more!

What's that smell?

  • Leaky ducts might be pulling in odors from crawl spaces, attics or garages.
  • A duct system that has been visited by animals may need to be replaced.
