How does house leakage testing work?
- A Blower Door is used to depressurize the building shell.
- A reading is taken on how much air it takes to depressurize the house.
- Based on the volume of the home, an approximate Air Change per Hour (ACH) reading is calculated.
- A smoke pen or infrared thermal camera may be used to locate specific leakage areas.
What’s the difference between Home Performance & air/duct leakage testing?
- Home Performance goes beyond basic leakage testing and addresses all areas of your home’s energy use including insulation, appliances, combustion safety and provides you with a simple payback calculation to see how long it takes to recoup your weatherization investment.

Why should I have my ducts sealed by Premium Efficiency?
- Sealed ducts improve air flow and air quality.
- Sealed ducts increase comfort within your home.
- You can save money on your heating or cooling bills.
How does duct leakage testing work?
- All supply and return registers are temporarily taped off.
- A testing fan (Duct Blaster®) is connected to the return or furnace.
- The house and duct system are pressurized.
- A reading is taken on how much duct leakage is occurring outside the conditioned space (attics, crawl spaces, garages).
Who should have their ducts tested for leaks?
- Any forced-air heating system with ducts outside the conditioned space (attics, crawl spaces, un-condition basements, garages)
- When ever equipment is being swapped out or upgraded, most utilities require ducts to be tested and sealed for equipment rebates
- When purchasing a home with a forced air heating/cooling system
- When animals have been found and removed from crawl spaces
Your ducts may leak if:
- If you experience high utility bills
- Uneven heating and cooling
- Your home has poor indoor-air quality
- You have drafts from the ducts
- Other work in attic or crawl has been done
- Your ducts were originally sealed with tape
- If your ducts are outside of your heated space
they should be tested for tightness.
- Both newer and older systems can leak. The age
of the system doesn't really matter.
How can sealing the ducts improve my heating and cooling system?
- Increase air flow through registers
- Shorten run time of furnace
- Get all the air you pay for
